Kobe doin' work

I just finished watching the Kobe documentary titled "Kobe doin' Work", produced by Spike Lee. Spike Lee wanted to capture Kobe's intensity, his love and passion for the game- He definitely did that in this film.

It's always been reported how much Kobe studies the game, studies video, and really uses it to his advantage. This becomes easily apparent in the things that Kobe's microphone picks up during the course of the game. Based on tendencies of other players, he's able to advise his teammates on how to defend someone, which moves to anticipate and on offense, he knows how to keep the opponent off guard. Another impressive facet of Kobe's basketball IQ is his ability to see things on the court as the game progresses. By that I mean defensive schemes, and how to counter the opponents defense or vice versa.

One cool part, unrelated to basketball skill, is how he talks to his teammates in foreign languages, obviously to Pau Gasol in Spanish, then to Sasha in Italian (although he's Serbian, who's real name is Alexander), then to Ronny Turiaf in French, well not really but when Ronny made a dunk he goes "Ca va?, ca va?" which usually means how are you? but I guess he meant it in the sense of "yea wassup" haha...

Another memorable part of the documentary was Sasha talking to Kobe in a whinny little kid's voice in reference to the referees, "You got to tell them....they are pushin in the back"...

Anyway, a very good documentary. It's definitely not for everybody. I think the interest in this documentary will separate the Laker fans who think Kobe is good just because and those Laker fans who know why Kobe is so good. I'm often very critical of Kobe, but I appreciate his hard work and his approach to the game. This documentary separates plain Laker fans from the Laker fans who are basketball junkies.
